More than 600 community volunteers converged on the Verde Valley Fairgrounds Saturday to help Manzanita Outreach-Verde Valley Kids Against Hunger achieve its most successful single-day food packaging event ever.
Kids Against Hunger set a goal Saturday to package 250,000 meals and when the final box was packed the total came to 280,640 meals.
In all, KAH has packed 331,586 meals in 2015. What's more, the organization has now surpassed the 1-million meal mark since its first event in April 2011 as it has now packaged 1,115,882 meals.
The organization was formed following the Haitian earthquake in 2010 to meet the needs of starving people -- especially starving children -- there.
Since then, the organization has also packaged a separate meal product for distribution in the Verde Valley and Yavapai County. Saturday's event marked a first for Kids Against Hunger International as a Latin mix rice-and-beans meal was packaged for distribution locally.
Saturday's volunteer workforce for the event included churches from all over Verde Valley, students and faculty from Mingus Union, Sedona Red Rock HS, Camp Verde HS, middle schools and charters and private schools, the Cottonwood Police Dept, Cottonwood and Verde Valley fire departments and Cottonwood City employees.
Businesses from all over Verde Valley donated packers, food, needed supplies and funds.
All donations to Manzanita Outreach are tax deductible, and the organization also has been approved for the Arizona Tax Credit.
